January 19, 2010 New York
I thought you might like to know about some of the major accomplishments that donors made possible last year for poor New Yorkers. I’d also like to update you on Robin Hood’s financial status and why the choices made by our supporters during 2010 continue to matter.
Last year, thanks to your generosity, we invested over $130 million in more than 200 programs and schools throughout the city’s poorest neighborhoods, touching the lives of more than 400,000 New Yorkers.
To put this achievement into perspective, 2009 was the most difficult year for our neighbors since the inception of Robin Hood 20 years ago. With 120,000 different New Yorkers sleeping in shelters, 1.3 million visiting soup kitchens and 40 percent of black men not working, the need in our city hit crisis levels.
With charities across the city struggling to meet this rising demand, it was a year when every dollar mattered—and Robin Hood’s supporters came through for New York City. Thanks to your donations and the 1:1 matching gifts made by George Soros and Robin Hood’s board, I am pleased to report that Robin Hood reached its 2009 fundraising goal of $148.8 million. As we update you on our work throughout the year, please remember that the dollar-for-dollar challenge continues through 2010. It is certain that the needs of our neighbors will persist as well. Thank you for your continued partnership.
Sincerely,
David Saltzman
Executive Director
