January 19, 2010 New York
Last year was the most difficult one for poor New Yorkers since the inception of Robin Hood 20 years ago. But thanks to your generosity, in 2009 we invested over $130 million in more than 200 programs and schools throughout the city’s poorest neighborhoods, touching more than 400,000 New Yorkers. Here, we focus on Robin Hood’s health-related investments.
Robin Hood funds clinics and other programs that improve our neighbors’ odds of leading healthy, productive, long lives. This year we partnered with the Department of Health on a groundbreaking coronary care program that will literally save thousands of lives. The program equips doctors in poor neighborhoods with a sophisticated electronic medical records system and provides them a financial reward for such outcomes as reduced cholesterol levels.
Some other highlights from 2009, made possible by your generosity:
- Over 90,000 low-income families enrolled in government-subsidized health insurance
- Over 300 New Yorkers screened or treated for cancer and 700 for hepatitis B or C
- Over 1,000 children treated for asthma
- 1,000 overweight and obese children provided with medical care, nutrition counseling and physical training
- Health and social services provided for 11,600 H.I.V.-positive New Yorkers
- Primary care delivered to 10,000 children and families
- Free medical care for over 2,000 uninsured New Yorkers
- School-based mental health care provided for 2,000 students
With your partnership, in 2010 we’ll be able to continue this important work.
