Robin Hood Shelters

January 19, 2010 New York

Last year was the most difficult one for poor New Yorkers since the inception of Robin Hood 20 years ago. But thanks to your generosity, in 2009 we invested over $130 million in more than 200 programs and schools throughout the city’s poorest neighborhoods, touching more than 400,000 New Yorkers. Here, we focus on Robin Hood’s work to address homelessness.

Homelessness in New York City is best understood as two problems—street homelessness and shelter homelessness. Since 2005, the number of individuals living on the streets has dropped over 50 percent. The City’s Department for Homeless Services took a lead from our grantees and funded an innovative consortium of providers. On shelter homelessness, especially for families, we worry about the rising tide. Today, 10,000 families are living in family shelters, including over 16,500 children. Robin Hood grantees are absorbing a small percentage of this growing population.

Three achievements of note, made possible by Robin Hood donors:
  • Legal advice provided through Single Stop prevented nearly 2,900 evictions.
  • This year, Robin Hood’s housing grantees sheltered over 4,000 families. Nearly 400 homeless individuals moved into our grantees’ housing in 2007. And about 90 percent of them remained housed at the end of 2008.
  • The Bridge Fund and Coalition for the Homeless made over 1,100 emergency housing grants to prevent eviction.
In 2010, with your help, Robin Hood will continue to work to stave off evictions and to find housing for homeless families.
