A TALE OF TWO CITIES
The story of New York City is a tale of two cities.

The wealthiest 20 percent of Manhattanites make nearly 40 times more than the poorest 20 percent. Mere blocks from the Upper East Side, 75 percent of babies are born into poverty in Central Harlem. In fact, New York City has a higher poverty rate than New Orleans.

But maybe you already are Robin Hood and you have a high poverty IQ. Rate your knowledge with the answers below:
1Less than 30 percent of charitable giving in the U.S. goes to fight poverty.
2New York City has the county with the highest level of urban poverty: the Bronx.
3In the U.S., a family of four is considered living in poverty if their annual income is $19,350.
4More than 50 percent of babies born in New York City are born into poverty.
5A high school diploma adds $7,000 per year to future earnings.
6On average, 16,000 children sleep in a city shelter each night.
7Seventy-five percent of Americans donated to charity in the past twelve months.
8People cite the desire to help as their top motivation for giving to charity.

What is Robin Hood doing to turn these statistics into possibilities?
We find, fund and partner with over 200 of the most effective poverty-fighting schools and programs in the city’s poorest neighborhoods to change the fates of those who battle educational failure, joblessness, teen pregnancy, abuse, AIDS, hunger and homelessness. We then provide management assistance and support services to make these programs even stronger, and when we see unmet needs, we launch initiatives to address them.
