Bloomingdale Family Program

This Harlem preschool was launched in the early 1960s and continues to be led by Susan Feingold, one of its founders and first teachers. Now it belongs to the federally funded Head Start program, which promotes school readiness. Nearly one-third of the 200 children (age three to five) have special emotional, mental and physical needs. Although they are integrated with typically developing children, they require a number of early therapeutic interventions.

Robin Hood support pays for special education services, speech therapy, therapeutic summer camp and other programs. The children are monitored and receive follow-up services as they leave Bloomingdale for kindergarten and continue with after-school tutoring through fifth grade.
