Brooklyn Kindergarten Society

Founded in 1891 as the first free kindergarten in Brooklyn for immigrant children, Brooklyn Kindergarten Society (B.K.S.) offers pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes for 400 low-income children at five sites in housing projects in Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights. Approximately 80 percent of B.K.S. children are of African-American or Caribbean-American descent, including many recent immigrants to New York. At each site, a highly qualified, Robin Hood-funded social worker identifies children in need of early intervention and special education services, helps families cope with domestic violence, abuse and neglect and promotes access to G.E.D. classes and parenting workshops. Most important, the social workers involve parents in their children's education.
