Over the last 20 years, thousands of kids have been helped by Children of the City, an all volunteer program in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. With its range of social services and activities that encompass everything from home visits for families in distress to community-wide Thanksgiving dinners, Children of the City has touched the lives of nearly five percent of the under 18 population of the neighborhood.
Recognizing that children and their parents needed support after September 11th, Children of the City brought in a professional social worker to assist the families in its neighborhood. Having identified hundreds of children suffering post September 11th, Children of the City started "Heal New York" to provide individual and group counseling to these children and their families. The September 2002 $134,000 Relief Fund grant enabled the program to hire needed staff, do intensive outreach, and serve 228 families and 373 children through home visits and another 614 children through group sessions.
A September 2003 $275,000 Relief Fund grant helped support "Heal New York" for another year. It enabled the program to hire three additional bilingual counselors and provide counseling services to children in Staten Island as well as Sunset Park. An August 2004 $195,000 relief grant is enabling the program to continue offering its counseling services for another year while transitioning those who still need help to longer term services.
