David Levin

1999 Hero

Principal and Founder, KIPP Academy

KIPP Academy was created through the vision of David Levin. Only 23 years old when he started KIPP Academy, he had a burning desire to improve public education, fresh ideas, and the passion to see them through. In 1996, Robin Hood met David and decided to take a chance on this young visionary.

Clearly, Robin Hood's bet paid off. In the shadow of Yankee Stadium, KIPP Academy has led the Bronx in test score improvement and has been the highest performing middle school in the Bronx in reading, math and attendance. David was honored by President Clinton at the White House as one of the 25 outstanding school leaders in the country. Within the walls of KIPP, David has given his young students the greatest gift in the world, the opportunity to reach their full potential. And in the education system, David has provided an inspiring model, and taught everyone some valuable lessons.
